The statistics are grim: over 1200 journalists killed since 1992, thousands more assaulted and persecuted; 200 in prison and hundreds more threatened by onerous and misused libel and security laws; nearly 500 exiled from their home countries since 2008.

And yet we persevere. Indeed, journalists are digging deeper and asking tougher questions, in more places and with better tools, than ever before. Here are three inspiring case studies -- from India, Malaysia, and Thailand -- from journalists who are fighting the good fight for accountability, transparency, and an independent, professional news media.
